Whether you're developing a large or small site, biodiversity is now a legal requirement.

What is Biodiversity Net Gain?

BNG was introduced by the UK Government as a way to ensure that wildlife habitats are lefts in a considerably better state than they were pre development. This means that developers are required to deliver a BNG of at least 10% so that there is a better quality habitat.

Who does BNG affect?

It will affect the following:

  • developer of major developments

  • developer of small sites i.e 1-9 dwellings

  • developer of nationally significant infrastructure projects from late November 2025

  • land manager wanting to sell in the BNG market

  • local planning authority (LPA

What do you think?

Do you think that BNG is a positive legal requirement for the future of UK developments OR do you think that this is another obstacle put forward by the Government to developers, making it even harder to hit housing demand? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

There's lots of information on the Government website concerning BNG - please visit for more information.
